Sarah Poskitt - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
I’ve been active since a young age and played Netball throughout school and college, I actually hated any sort of distance running at that point though! However I did neglect sport during university and lost my fitness, until I secured a charity place in the London Marathon 2012 which kicked off my love for running and I’ve not looked back since!
How did you first get into triathlon?
I was already running and completed a number of half marathons, when I had a debate with a friend whether running or cycling was better. He dared me to enter myself in the ballot for Ride London 100 and I got a place! I didn’t even own a road bike at this stage so got kitted out and ended up falling in love with cycling. I decided having completed the London Marathon and Ride London 100, I wanted to finish the set and complete Swim Serpentine to get the London Classics medal. It just made sense to then put the 3 together and start racing triathlons!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Completing the London Marathon 2012. The atmosphere and the crowds are just incredible! Even though it was my slowest race, the feeling of crossing that finish line just gave me the bug to race more.
What is your proudest achievement?
Getting my first sub 2 hour Half Marathon! I’ve never been a natural runner and had to train hard to see any improvement in my pace. Breaking the 2 hour mark was a milestone I had been working towards for a couple of years, now I’m on the way to breaking 1.50!
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Luckily not during a race, however 2 weeks before Ride London 100 I had a pretty nasty bike crash. Thankfully there were no broken bones, but I came away with severe road rash on my shin and knee which got infected. I had to go get the dressing changed every couple of days, and every time I would ask the nurse ‘but I’m still going to be okay to do the race?!’ I was so happy when 2 days before the race, the dressing came off and I got the green light. It had knocked out the last two weeks of my training but at least it meant my legs were fresh!
How do you overcome setbacks?
I will hold my hands up and say I get frustrated with any sort of injury or setback that stops me training. However those are the times when I call on my support network - family, friends, my run club, my cycling club and the wider triathlon community. Everyone has been there at some point and it’s good to listen to advice and use the time to set new goals.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Nutrition is so important, both in training and on race day! Find what works for you and practice your fuelling strategy before race day.
What are your goals?
My goal for 2021 is to complete my first Ironman. I’ve set myself the target of 13 hours, although for my first I will be happy to just cross that finish line! I’m also hoping to qualify for the standard duathlon 2022 European Championships.
Who inspires you?
So many people in the triathlon community, I get inspired seeing anyone achieve their goals, both pro athletes and people completely new to the sport. Recently I’ve been so inspired by Chris Nikic who became the first person with Downs Syndrome to complete an Ironman in November last year, his vision for 1% better is something everyone can live by.
