Will Darcy - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
I've done sport for as long as I can remember although I only found out I could run in year 4 I'd played rugby, football, and cricket a lot by then. Now I do sport every day without fail.
How did you first get into biathlon?
I got into Biathlon quite recently after noticing British Biathlon were looking for endurance athletes to join the talent programme and as I run already I thought it'd be a great opportunity and since have done many camps and a couple of races.
If you're interested in starting your own fitness journey, Sundried's Activewear is suitable for people of all abilities.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race to date was the British Cross Challenge in Cardiff in 2021, I had no idea where I would come and so when I finished third I was over the moon, I raced it well and was very surprised. In Biathlon my favourite race was the mass start at the last few camps, racing teammates is always great fun so I really enjoy those.
What is your proudest achievement?
Being selected for the Biathlon talent programme and finishing 12th at the cross country British champs are my highlights so far.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
In my first skiing race, I was going down the first hill on the first lap and had a painful fall, I got back up again but wasn't happy with myself as it was my first race ever.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I use setbacks like bad races or a bad training session or injury to think about what I'm doing wrong and also to use it as motivation to improve and work harder in training so it won't happen again.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
I wish I'd been told that there's more to sport than winning races as I used to be extremely upset if a tiny thing went wrong.
What are your goals?
I hope to join the British biathlon development squad at the start of 2022 and also to qualify for the England cross country team for the European Championships in either 2022 or 2023.
Who inspires you?
Runners such as Mo Farah, Eliud Kipchoge have had a huge impact on the way I train and work, however, university runners like Cooper Teare and Charlie Hicks help me have something to aim for which is a little closer than the other two. In Biathlon my coaches inspire me and Mike Dixon, Britain's best ever biathlete has an impact.
