Scott Stacey - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
I've always been quite a sporty person, In my school days I played a lot of football and then in my late teens and 20s I played a lot of golf as well as going to the gym and eventually started pounding the pavements after signing up to a half marathon.
How did you first get into triathlon?
I was doing a lot of running and felt I needed to add something just to try and break up the monotony. I started cycling to work and then going swimming and then it seemed a great idea to put it all together and try triathlon. I googled my local club and joined and it went from there.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Ironman Barcelona. As soon as I got into triathlon my goal was to become a Ironman. I love the distance as it's an amazing test of not only physical strength but mental strength as well. Also Ironman as a brand put on a great day full of glitz and glamour!
What is your proudest achievement?
Becoming a Ironman.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
I'm lucky enough not to have had any major disasters whilst racing but during a 46 mile ultramarathon in 2019 on a very hot day I did suffer heat exhaustion and at one stage went a bit delirious. Luckily my friend Claire (she'll appreciate the name drop) ran/walked with me to the final checkpoint where I managed to sort myself out and carry on for the last 12 miles without to many problems.
How do you overcome setbacks?
Setbacks are part and parcel of what we do. It’s disappointing but you can't dwell on things, you have to accept it, then try and forget about it and crack on! Always remember that we learn the most on the training sessions and races that don’t go according to plan!
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Just to be yourself and not worry too much about what anybody else is doing or trying to match other people around you. Also to incorporate other things into your training like core strength and yoga etc as it's amazing how much it improves your swim bike run!
What are your goals?
My goal is to complete as many Ironman events around Europe as I can… if my fitness, and my wallet allow me to.
Who inspires you?
A lot of the famous triathletes inspire me but to be honest I get a lot of inspiration from the triathletes in my Tri Club who are great at what they do and are very dedicated even though they have busy lives and jobs to juggle at the same time as spending hours training and racing.
Why work with Sundried?
I like that Sundried is very sustainable and ethical. The issues with the environment are very important and we all need to help where we can. Also the kit looks very cool and is priced very reasonably compared to a lot of other brands so you don’t have to remortgage the house to get kitted out!
