Samantha Amend - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
Yes from school I loved PE and ran mainly 800m/1500m, Hurdles and Long jump and competed for the school. It wasn't until I left college I wanted to run a marathon, at the time not getting into the ballot selection it was some years later after my first child in 2002.
How did you first get into triathlon?
Not a triathlete, Run for GB in 50, 100k and 24hr.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Track 100 Miler where I broke a 31 year standing record on April 24th 2021 - Winning Team Gold in Doha 50k in 2016 for GB.
What is your proudest achievement?
Getting selected for GB in 2016 was like a dream come true. Having never had the opportunity to train full time due to having both children/ full-time work. This has since lead onto further opportunities in the 100k and 24hr selection.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Too many to mention, I see them as opportunities to learn from and refine. I try not to spend to much negative energy on disappointment and stress and pressure are the main things to conquer.
How do you overcome setbacks?
Reflection, also realise that its important to look at what happened and to have a positive mindset.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Structured training and need for tempos/interval etc so more a routine. Also having spent years getting away with no stretching post run have suffered in later years with my range of movement and flexibility.
What are your goals?
British records for various ultra distances, to push myself to run some credible distances/times and also 2022 to improve my marathon time.
Who inspires you?
Many ultra runners who achieve great distances both male and female and recent challenges runners have done with FKT ( Fastest Known Times) during Covid to stay focused. Also as someone who help with British Masters love to see older athletes achieving phenomenal times in events and always believed like with football sporting careers finished by mid 30's.
