Richard Moore - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
I’ve been involved with sport since I was 9 years old. Started at School with Rugby, Football, Cricket and Hockey. Competed in Hockey and Cricket up to County level, prior to qualifying as a fitness instructor and initially dabbling at Triathlon. Played Hockey throughout military career representing the Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Combined Services. Took up triathlon properly 18 months ago and haven’t looked back.
How did you first get into triathlon?
Initially back when I was 19 training to join the Royal Marines. Used as endurance and resilience training… obviously worked . Two years ago I saw there was a local event on here in Exmouth, Devon and I thought I’d have a go. I had a great time and instantly caught the bug. I haven’t looked back, hiring a friend as a personal trainer (@EX3 PT) and racing a very limited season last year (due to C-19), with promising results. I have since joined Triathlon club Podium Addict, loving the training and looking forward to oncoming season, which is culminating in the New Forest Half 70.3!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Dawlish Sprint triathlon. The weather was amazing and the final mile of the run was along the sea front…. absolutely lush.
What is your proudest achievement?
Ultimately passing out of Royal Marine Commando Training and receiving the coveted Green Beret.
Although most recently completing my first half marathon in 13 years over the Devon cliffs in a time of 1Hr 47
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
My first attempt of using tri shoes on the bike. Having practiced and practiced the week before, using elastic bands to keep the shoes level for a smooth transition, I thought I had it all sorted. I didn’t take into account ‘fuzzy sea-swim head’, where I missed the shoe when jumping on the bike, my shoe scrapping across the floor and finally pinging off the bike by about ten feet! I had to jump off, refit the shoe and jump back on the bike loosing a good chunk of time…. Oh dear.
How do you overcome setbacks?
Mindset, patience and working on my weaknesses…… backed up by sweets and wine .
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, no matter on results, or setbacks. Training and racing should be fun and challenging, always have a smile on your face.
What are your goals?
UK Age Group qualification in the next 3 years.
Who inspires you?
I have lots of friends that have had to overcome severe difficulties through injury. One person that comes to mind is my old Troop Sergeant, from when I was a young Troop Commander. He lost one of his legs in a road traffic accident, but since then he has gone on to achieve some incredible feats; one of which was a World record breaking Solo Row across the Atlantic! Never let anything hold you back…. Nothing is impossible!
