Rich Ham - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
I have always been into sport from young age and decided to get into running in my late teens as a confidence booster and just for general fitness. I soon got the bug which gave me the motivation to keep pushing myself and setting myself goals.
How did you first get into triathlon?
After running for a number of years, I wanted to explore and see where I could go next. I often saw triathlon posts on social media and thought to myself could I do this? How far can I go? I entered my first sprint triathlon and seriously enjoyed it, much like the running I wanted to see how far I could go and still to this day carry on pushing harder.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race to date was Ironman Marbella 70.3 in Spain. Everything about this event was just fantastic, a flat swim with an scenic and very challenging bike course, followed by a run along the coastline.
What is your proudest achievement?
Gaining all world athlete status through the Ironman 70.3 races I have completed so far.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Amsterdam marathon for me was a hard one, I planned and hoped to go sub 3 hours but in fact I ended up hitting the wall at half way and almost walking the rest of the race.
How do you overcome setbacks?
Analyse what went wrong, learn from your lessons and set new goals.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
If I had to give one bit of advice for Triathlon and especially racing triathlon, it would be to make sure you practice, practice, practice transition and do plenty of brick sessions. These are key to ensure you know how your body will react under the pressures and strains of racing.
What are your goals?
My current goal will be to train and complete a full Ironman in 2022.
