Cameron is a passionate triathlete and cyclist who loves to compete. He talks to Sundried about training and racing.
Have you always been into sport?
I have been into sport since I could walk. I grew up in a house where my mom and uncle were both track stars in their youth and had a passion for sport, it wasn’t long until I had a ball in my hand or running around like mad.
How did you first get into triathlon?
I’ve always had a passion for swimming, cycling and running, I was training everyday but not really towards a goal, so I thought... hey why not give it a bash, and from then I was absolutely hooked!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race to date would have to be Tour Durban in South Africa in 2019. I got into the breakaway after chasing down the group after dropping my chain, once we made the break we managed to keep our gap. To control the race and be on the limit was more than you can imagine!
What is your proudest achievement?
Proudest moment for me would be having a “cycling family”, a team behind me, to know that I am needed and I have worth, and as silly as it sounds, building the bike of my dreams from scratch.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
I haven’t had any disasters during a race besides getting a flat or dropping a chain in a crucial moment... or a touch of wheels. My biggest disaster was actually on the ride to a training session!
How do you overcome setbacks?
I take a step back and reflect on what made me fall in love with what I love doing... and also a LOT of motivational fitness videos on YouTube!
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
It would be to give it your all and try everything; every sport you can, you won’t like all of them but you will never know if you don’t try. You will regret every chance you don’t take. And do this for you! All these little statements are just a few of the statements I wish I had be been told and had the time to really think about back when I first started out.
What are your goals?
My goals are simple: I want to be the best version of me possible and to encourage and inspire as many people as I possibly can along the way!
Who inspires you?
This is a bit of a tough one, where do I even start! It’s people or athletes that carry themselves in a mature and honest character through the high and low points. But if I had to choose someone it would really be somebody along the lines of Chris Froome, someone with all the fame and glory who is still so humble and when the time comes, becomes a team player, someone who won’t be selfish and will do what’s best for someone else, people who aren’t selfish and can put their ego behind them for the better of other people, that’s who inspires me.
Why work with Sundried?
I have followed Sundried for a while and just loved the quality and how they look after customers and conduct business, seeing other people doing activity and being happy inspires me more to play my part in inspiring other people! I want to leave my footprint in the Sundried community.
