Ali Trauttmansdorff - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
Yes but never this intensely! I always played team sports and participated in general fitness and yoga, but only really reached this level when I was 39!
How did you first get into triathlon?
A friend literally jumped over the fence a few weeks after I had had my second child and suggested she could help me to get back into shape by joining her for a local triathlon. To be honest, I actually did not understand what she was talking about but said yes! My first race was tough and I didn't know what I was doing, but I really enjoyed it. The result was awful though. I realised what I needed to do and the next race, I beat her. That was the beginning of the journey and that I realised I had a good running capacity in particular.
If you are interested in getting into Triathlon, Sundried's kit is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned athletes. We have both men's and women's options available.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race was my first ITU age group appearance in Chicago. Not because of my performance, but because I had qualified and was there against all odds. A few months earlier I had a hip operation for impingement and managed to work through physio and get myself fit enough to compete. I was totally new to international racing, but it felt a real privilege to be there. I also met a lot of friends for life during that trip!
What is your proudest achievement?
Being able to race cross country with my daughter. I love seeing her develop and getting the odd cheer from her when I race, even though I imagine it must be hugely embarrassing seeing your mother covered in mud!
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Not many fortunately. I have had some hard swims I have had to battle through and I have only had one DNF when a spoke came out of my wheel - game over!
How do you overcome setbacks?
Setbacks are part of being an athlete. You need to come up with a strategy by listening and learning and sticking to it. Discipline and belief are key.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
That you can achieve more than you first think. Opportunities unfold on the journey.
What are your goals?
To win an international medal and give back to the sport by coaching juniors.
Who inspires you?
Many of my fellow athletes - everyone has a story to tell that inspires.
