Antonio Nascimento Athlete Ambassador
Antonio is a Portuguese athlete who first entered a triathlon to pay homage to his father. He talks to Sundried about what triathlon means to him.
Have you always been into sport?
Yes, I have been doing judo since the age of 7. I am now 49 years old and have been doing sport for 42 years. I am a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and judo.
How did you first get into triathlon?
I entered a triathlon in memory of my late father. I did Ironman Brazil to thank him for all that he did for me.
What's been your best race to date?
It was my first Ironman for sure; I will never forget the emotion throughout the race, making the time cut-off was the most important achievement of my life because it was a tribute to my father.
And your proudest achievement?
I am proud of myself for all the races I have completed, but representing Portugal in three Ultraman endurance races was without a doubt a dream and reason for much honour and pride.
Have you ever had any racing disasters/your toughest race yet?
The first time I did the Ultraman World Championships was undoubtedly the toughest race I have ever done. The climate was very challenging which hindered my performance. I didn't make the cut-off times but I continued as a participant and the support at the finish line was amazing.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I stay focused and keep in mind everything I have already achieved. Sport has made me the man I am today and is a way of celebrating life.
What advice do you wish you'd been given before you started competing?
The best advice is to follow your dreams and believe you can achieve anything.
What are your goals for 2019 and 2020?
2019 has been tough as I have been battling lots of health problems. 2020 will be the year I come back stronger than ever, celebrate my 50th birthday, and see what I can achieve.
Who do you take inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from my parents; without them I would not be 1% of who I am today.
What do you like about Sundried and what is your favourite piece of our kit?
I love that Sundried is more than just a brand but is a vision to change the world for the better. My favourite kit is the running gear.
