Rowan Mills Sundried Personal Trainer Ambassador

Rowan Mills tells us about his journey from the army physical training corps to becoming a PT training his clients in German!

Tell us about your journey to fitness? Where did it all start?

I have always been involved with sport from a very young age. Competing in football, athletics, and hockey to county and national standard. I then furthered my sporting and fitness journey when I joined the military; I served with the Royal Army Physical Training Corps during my 23 years in the Army. During this time I studied and completed a BSc (Hons) in Strength & Conditioning.

What are your training goals now?

Training smart is extremely important as we get older.

Tell us one unusual fact we wouldn’t know about you:

I teach all my PT and lessons in German.

What would future you, tell yourself when you were starting out?

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Do you follow a specific nutrition plan? If so, what/when do you eat?

I eat well 80% of the time, as I believe that we all need to live a little.

What do you do to keep your clients motivated? Do you have any top tips to keep motivated?

You have probably heard this often enough but setting goals is so important for clients, without goals they will lose motivation and the drive to succeed. I always like to involve a sporting element in the training program to break things up, generally because they don’t realise how hard they are working and think of it as a break.

Talk us through your training regime.

My regime follows an 8-10 week cycle. I mainly train at a 10/12 rep range as I have found that as I get older this lessens the impact on me generally and I still keep a good shape and fitness level. I have moved away from heavy lifting as those days are behind me. I am very active during my TRX and boot camp sessions, and I manage and track my activity.

How do you keep your fitness knowledge up to date?

Working in Europe allows me to stay up to date from different countries. I attended the first ever TRX International trainer summit in Athens last year and also met D. Kelly Starrett and Steve Maxwell at mobility seminars in Germany. I am registered with REPS & the UKSCA who provide excellent updates. Being current is a must, but also implementing this information is vital.

What are your top 3 trainer tips?

Be consistent. I see and hear too many people talking about how they don’t have the time and energy, but they’ll waste away hours watching TV and interacting through social media.

If you could only do one workout for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A body weight circuit. No need for equipment and you're only limited by your imagination.

What are your training goals?

To stay mobile, strong, functional, and have fun.

Why work with Sundried?

I have a strong ethos of values and standards from my military career and Sundried has similar values that go hand in hand.
