If you want to upgrade your gym clothing wardrobe then there are a few key pieces of gym clothes for men that you should be investing in. Here in the UK, we have cold winters and recently have been having incredibly hot summers, so you need to make sure you've got the right ratio of gym tops, vests, shorts, trousers, and leggings to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.

    Summer gym clothing for men

In the summer, you will be sweating buckets before you even make it into the gym so you need to make sure you're comfortable. Sweat-wicking gym t-shirts and sleeveless vests will prevent chafing and will make you feel light and free instead of weighed down and uncomfortable. Less is more in summer and you'll want light and breathable fabrics, ideally crafted in a seamless design which will move as freely as you do.

When it comes to gym bottoms, you'll want to stick with loose shorts that will give your legs as much air as possible. If you do a lot of running, cycling, or yoga then it'll be vital that you're comfortable and not feeling restricted in sweaty leggings or gym trousers. Save those for the cold winter days!

Winter gym clothing for men in the UK

Compared to countries like Canada and Russia, a UK winter is relatively mild. However, when you're a UK native, anything below 0 degrees Celsius is enough to warrant getting the gym leggings out and layering up for your workouts. A lot of gyms these days are in old warehouses rather than cosy leisure centres, and so you'll still need to wrap up warm even though you're training indoors.

A good base layer such as a long sleeved compression top worn under a gym t-shirt will be the perfect way to combine performance with comfort and make sure you're not getting cold between sets. If the majority of your training consists of lifting weights, you can even get away with wearing a thick winter pullover hoodie which will be sure to keep you warm and comfortable. If you tend to do more cardio at the gym, this might not be such a sensible option.

  • Mens Gym Clothing

    Mens gym clothing

From tank tops to men's gym leggings, there are a lot of elements of mens gym clothing. We guide you on what to look for when buying new gym clothing and which items you need most.

    Mens Gym Leggings

Whether you're wearing your gym leggings under shorts or on their own, you need to be comfortable in them. There are different types of men's leggings out there depending on your needs, your goals, and the type of training you do. There are compression leggings which are said to improve circulation and even benefit your training. There are seamless leggings which are perfect worn as a base layer under a pair of shorts for added protection and coverage. Seamless men's leggings are also great for the transition between home and the gym, especially in winter. They double up for street style and can be worn as a casual outfit as well as to the gym or for outdoor training.

Personal trainer Shea wears his Sundried Roteck 2.0 Leggings in grey under a pair of shorts for effortless style and comfort.

You can also wear your gym leggings on their own. In this instance, you want to make sure they are sufficiently thick that they cover you properly and you feel confident wearing them. You need them to stay opaque as you squat, jump, and lift while at the gym but they also need to be light enough to allow for complete freedom of movement.

Triathlete Matt wears his Sundried Roteck 2.0 leggings in black on their own to enjoy the complete freedom of movement as he warms up.

    Mens Gym T Shirts

When it comes to men's gym t-shirts, comfort is paramount. There's nothing worse than being put off your workout due to a chafing t shirt or being overly aware of your sweat patches. Most people would avoid wearing grey to the gym for fear of this happening, however the Sundried Olperer T Shirt is made from 100% recycled materials and these natural fabrics lend themselves to superior sweat-wicking and fast-drying meaning that sweat patches are a thing of the past. The material is also super soft so you'll feel amazing while you train as well as being naturally odour-blocking for extra peace of mind.

CrossFitter Tom doesn't need to worry about sweat patches in his Sundried Olperer T Shirt made from 100% recycled coffee grounds!

    Mens Gym Trousers

If shorts or leggings are not for you, then you'll be wearing trousers or joggers to the gym. Your average pair of heavy cotton jogging bottoms probably aren't ideal for wearing at the gym as they will be bulky and won't wick away sweat, meaning you may get sweat rash which will be very uncomfortable and is not advisable. You need a pair of dedicated gym trousers which are specifically designed to be worn during a workout and still maintain all the performance technical qualities you'd expect from a pair of gym shorts or gym leggings.

    Mens gym trousers flexible stretchy

Arthur shows off his impressive stretching skills which he can achieve thanks to the flexibility of his Sundried Ortler Trousers.

It's also important that your men's gym trousers are super flexible so that you are not held back during your workout. The Sundried men's trousers are specifically designed with you in mind so that you can jump, squat, and lunge in the gym without your gym trousers holding you back. They are also stylish and smart enough that you can wear them for everyday wear as well as at the gym and they make the perfect all-day active bottom.

    Gym Vest For Men

For workouts in the summer when the temperature is climbing, a gym vest is vital for a comfortable workout. There are different types of men's gym vest from tank top to muscle vest and it's important to find one that suits you best. The Sundried Les Diablons muscle tank features a subtle design to the chest which will accentuate your physique and improve your confidence in the gym. It is made from premium Italian seamless materials so it is super comfortable and won't chafe as you move. It is also made with 4-way stretch materials so it won't lose its shape after a few wears.

  • Men's Gym Clothes

    mens gym clothes

We've all seen them, and sometimes we are them. The guy who shows off his entire torso in a super loose stringer vest or the guy who wears his Tough Mudder finisher's shirt to let everyone know he's done it. These are the men's gym clothes stereotypes that we love to hate and are guaranteed to make an appearance at your gym in one form or another.

This article is satire and is not meant to be taken seriously or cause offence.

    The Post-Contest T-shirt

This guy has completed an Ironman triathlon or a Tough Mudder event so he has earned his bragging rights and will wear that t-shirt whenever and wherever possible. Gym? Perfect! Out to dinner? You've got to let your date know your priorities. Best friend's wedding? Maybe a step too far.

Read more: 8 Things You'll Only Understand If You've Done Tough Mudder

    The Stringer Vest

Be careful not to startle this guy by out-lifting him, you may cause a nipple slip. Men in their stringer vests are more interested in their own cleavage than any woman's. Being able to pull off a stringer vest is almost like a certificate of size and these guys have earned their string vest status. The more muscle on show the better. This is also most likely to be the guy you can hear grunting and starts his workout with bicep curls.

    The 'What's Leg Day?' Sweatpants

There is no way the guy in sweatpants is doing anything other than an upper body workout. How do I know? Because running in sweatpants is an absolute no-go. Whilst they may be fine for upper body strength workouts, when it comes to cardio, sweatpants do what they say on the tin and will seriously make you sweat. It's possible this guy is trying to hide the fact he's never done a leg workout in his life, but we won't bring that up with him while he's curling in the squat rack.

The Guy With Every Bit Of Gear Possible

This guy seems to think that by investing in every bit of kit possible, he’ll be good at everything. Ever heard the phrase 'all the gear, no idea'? He wears a lifting belt for tricep dips, gloves for barbell work, knee sleeves on the bench, lifting straps, wraps, sweatbands... this guy has it all. Except for proper form or technique.

    The Toe Shoes

This guy tends to be Mr. Know-it-all, granted his knowledge is vast and in the most part very interesting, but have no doubt this guy will let you know about it. A man brave enough to wear toe shoes is brave enough to boast about their benefits to anyone who crosses his path. These guys will run better, lift with better form, and suffer fewer aches and have no doubt they’ll tell you it's all down to their footwear. And for some unknown reason, these are always the guys practising Kung-Fu in front of the lifting platforms.

    The Tights

This guy is brave and wears running leggings with no shorts over the top. Having the confidence to wear running tights without shorts is an achievement in itself, no matter what the workout. The argument is that these tights are designed with technical function to enable you to achieve your best throughout the training session and if you’re doing a session with any type of squatting or lunging, you don’t want your movement to be restricted by layering shorts over the top. If you’ve invested in a pair of running tights, you’ve most likely also invested enough into your training to have the kind of legs to pull them off.

    The Football Shirt

Chances are this guy could have been a professional footballer, but suffered a knee/hamstring injury and now slaves away in an office 9-5 instead of following his dream of being the next David Beckham. He was also handpicked by a club to play semi-professionally when he was 17. Now he runs on the gym treadmill for 20 minutes every night to work off the beer he drinks while watching the football at the pub.

    The Gym’s Own Branded Kit

This is your typical beginner exerciser. They received the welcome pack of a sweat towel, water bottle, and gym top when they signed up and felt oh-so motivated to change their life now that they've finally taken the plunge to actually join a gym. They wear their t-shirt with pride and do group fitness classes but seriously have no clue what they're doing.

    The Technical Top

These guys go hard and they need gym clothes that can keep up with the intensity of their workouts, so they invest in technical fabrics which have been tested to perform under pressure. These guys are at the gym so much they’re practically part of the furniture. Despite the fact he’d hate to admit it, this guy will think, “I bet I can out-run him though” every time anyone out-lifts him, or “I bet I out-lift him though” if someone dares to do their cardio faster than him. They want to be the best, so they wear the best.

Now, we might be a little biased, but wearing Sundried gym clothes will steer you clear of any negative stereotypes.

  • Summer Workout Wear For Men And Women

    summer workout essentials

Training throughout the summer can be tough, especially when battling a heatwave. We give you a run down of all your summer workout essentials and what to look for in summer activewear so you can sweat it out with no worries.

Best Leggings For Women In The Summer

Undoubtedly, the best leggings for women in the summer are Capri leggings. Named after the stunning isle of Capri in Italy, these leggings are cropped in length and present in a 3/4 length, meaning they finish just below the knee or mid-calf. If you don't feel comfortable working out in gym shorts but are getting too hot in your running leggings, cropped leggings are the answer.

There are lots of types of cropped women's workout leggings to choose from as they can vary in length. Some will finish right at the knee while some may be a little longer and finish mid-calf. Choosing the right length for you will depend on how much movement you require and how much coverage and protection you need. If you do a lot of trail running, you will benefit from a slightly longer pair of leggings, while someone who practises a sport like tennis or running may enjoy the freedom of movement and temperature control from a short pair of leggings.

    Mens Activewear Tops

There are lots of different types of activewear tops for men to choose from, and plenty that are suitable for summer. Avoid the compression gear and base layers and opt for an ultra cool t-shirt or vest instead.

    Men's Ultra Cool Gym Top

When the weather really heats up, an ultra cool gym top can be your saviour. There's nothing worse than sweating it out in a stuffy gym, so being comfortable in your men's gym top is paramount if you're going to have a good session. Look out for tops that feature superior sweat-wicking so that you don't experience chafing and super soft materials that are kind to your skin.

If you find you're constantly getting too hot during your workouts but you don't feel comfortable in a vest, then an ultra cool t-shirt is the perfect solution. The short capped sleeves will give added protection and activewear made from recycled materials can dry 200 times faster than cotton, meaning you won't be constantly drenched in sweat and suffering under a heavy t-shirt.

    Gym Vest For Men

The ultimate top for working out the summer has to be a great gym vest. For men, you want your tank top to give adequate coverage and protection while still keeping you cool and allowing freedom of movement. Look out for sleeveless t-shirts which present flattering designs and motifs that accentuate your best features.

There are different types of gym vest for men from tank tops to sleeveless tees and racerback stringers. Depending on the type of training you do will help you to decide which style is best for you. Bodybuilders tend to opt for stringers as they can show off your hard-earned physique better, while a sportsman might need more protection and coverage from the fabric and so will go for a sleeveless t-shirt which is more structured. In any case, you want a gym top made with four-way stretch materials so that you can move as much as you need without being restricted.

sleeveless t shirt mens gym vest top

    Mens Gym T-Shirt

The most classic of all styles is the gym t-shirt. Choose from more tight fitting designs which are great for running and cycling as they are more streamlined to a looser fit which is good for yoga or bodybuilding as you have more freedom of movement.

In any case, you want a t-shirt that fits well, is flexible, and wicks sweat. Add to this smart designs and stylish lines and you have the ideal combination. Look for fitness clothing that is light in colour as this will reflect the sunlight and stop your clothing from absorbing too much heat. Also look out for premium materials such as recycled polyester as these dry very quickly and provide additional technology such as UV protection and anti-odour capabilities. This will mean your activewear is working with you to keep you comfortable under tough conditions.

tight fitting gym top for men summer workout fitness clothing

    Yoga Clothes For Women

Yoga is something that is often done in high temperatures anyway - hot yoga anyone? - and so yoga clothing is often designed to be comfortable and withstand lots of sweating when it matters. As such, yoga clothes can be the perfect choice in the summer when you need something comfortable for your workouts.

    Loose flowing yoga top

If you don't need to be aerodynamic for your workout, a loose flowing yoga top will be perfect. The loose design will mean you have lots of freedom of movement and won't suffer from sweat-soaked fabric clinging to your body. It will also mean you can enjoy better air flow while you move and you are more likely to feel comfortable.

    Sports bra crop top

Yoga is a very low impact activity and as such you won't need an industrial-strength sports bra to keep you in place. This can be a huge benefit if you want to wear a very loose-fitting top as you can layer under it a crop top-style sports bra. Choosing a sports bra in a crop top style gives you more coverage and will mean it looks stylish and attractive on its own so you don't have to wear anything over it.

    Women's shorts

2-in-1 yoga shorts are the perfect choice as the compression-style under-short will give you protection and coverage no matter how much you contort your body, while the looser over-short will add style and features a subtle zip pocket for your valuables.

    Seamless Activewear

One of the worst things about training in the summer is suffering from itchy and chafing sportswear. If this affects you, then seamless activewear is the answer. This style of sportswear is a design innovation and means that itchy, chafing seams are a thing of the past. It's fully breathable and made with 4-way stretch materials so you can move as much as you need without being held back. The super soft materials are kind to your skin and will allow you to have a great workout without worrying about your activewear.

    Water Bottle

If you're working out in the summer, one of the most important things to have with you is a water bottle. These days, single-use plastic bottles are very much being scrutinised and rightly so. At Sundried, we believe in ethics and sustainability, which is why we developed our best-selling reusable water bottle so that you can help tackle the global plastic pollution problem and end the waste of single-use plastic.

Choosing a reusable water bottle can be good for your health, too. Our water bottle is BPA free meaning your health won't be compromised by prolonged exposure to the chemicals used to make certain plastics. Not only this, it is shatter-proof and leak-proof so you can throw it into your gym bag or even drop it off your bike and it won't flinch. Stay hydrated the right way!
