Steph Mcnally - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
Yes I’ve swam competitively since I was 4 and played hockey and golf to regional level.
How did you first get into triathlon?
When I ran out of swimming challenges a friend suggested I try the next level and add 2 more sports in - how hard could it be ...?!
If you are interested in getting into Triathlon, Sundried's kit is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned athletes. We have both men's and women's options available.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My only triathlon race to date thanks to Covid has been Ironman 70.3 in Turkey. 20 of my team Precision Race Team made it over and it was a real baptism of fire into the sport but I loved every second.
What is your proudest achievement?
Swimming the Channel with 3 friends in 2017. It was our 2nd attempt and we swam through the night which was terrifying but made the achievement all the more satisfying. I swam through jelly fish, watched the sunrise from the water and even saw dolphins! (I think, I may have been hallucinating at that point).
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Oh yes! Crashing on the bike in Turkey 25km in was not part of the plan. But I managed to get back on and finish the race with a sprained ankle and few cuts and bruises. Lots of lessons learned that day!
How do you overcome setbacks?
By surrounding myself with a team who keep me grounded, focused and grateful. As an endurance athlete you learn you’re in it for the long haul and with a bit of time most setbacks can become an advantage.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
There’s a lot of plates to keep spinning in triathlon so don’t stress about progressing all of them at the same time. Everyone has a strength and weakness so just make sure you play to yours.
What are your goals?
To podium in my age group in an Ironman event.
Who inspires you?
Kat Matthew’s - I love her attitude and honesty, she’s very grounded. My coach Raya Hubbell is so driven and sets a great example for her athletes. And another coach in my team Alice Tourell-North, she’s just a bad ass athlete.
Why work with Sundried?
I like Sundried for cutting through the sometimes pretentious nature of triathlon and providing good quality affordable kit. It can feel like a minefield knowing what to buy but I like that Sundried keeps it simple and covers all bases with a classic style.
