Have you always been into sport?
Yes. I’ve walked in the mountains for years, spending as much time as possible outdoors before turning to running as the weight piled on after work got less active.
How did you first get into triathlon?
I’m a runner not a triathlete (though I do swim and cycle a bit!) I was piling on the weight having just changed careers and finding myself sat at a desk and just decided to run one evening. I got slightly addicted and ran my first marathon within the year quickly followed by signing up to ultras - I love seeing how far I can push myself!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Has to be the trail events Lulworth Cove ‘marathon’ (read 50k!). I really had to dig deep up and down those cliffs and the sense of achievement was something else.
What is your proudest achievement?
With all races cancelled in 2020 I took on the 80miles of the Capital ring (around London) in October. This was my longest run and to do so with good friends supporting me was so much fun.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
I got into the habit of dnf-ing in some of the bigger ultras. It’s easy to do it again once you’ve done it once. Took some severe mental discipline to get through that!
How do you overcome setbacks?
It’s all learning. I’ve learnt more about my personality and fitness through the races I’ve messed up than the successes. But I do prefer the good ones!!!
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
It’s ok to think big. I hate the ethos that we should think ‘realistically’ - push your boundaries, you might surprise yourself.
What are your goals?
Some of the big ones - Paddy Buckley Round, Dragon’s Back, Cape Wrath Trail.
Who inspires you?
Damian Hall is a legend.
