Joshwa O'Brien - Athlete Ambassador
Have you always been into sport?
Yes, from a young age I was involved with sport and for a large part of my life only football. I have been lucky enough to have played football for teams such as Derby County and Burton Albion before moving to America to play on a scholarship for a short period of time. It wasn't until I was 22 until I got into cycling and then triathlons once I decided to stop playing football.
How did you first get into triathlon?
My dad. He has been involved in them for a long time now and completed quite a few Iron Man triathlons. I started with cycling (Which is still my favourite out of the 3) and then gradually got into the others.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
I haven't yet raced... but I am looking forward to racing as soon as possible.
What is your proudest achievement?
In sport is was gaining my scholarship to play football in America.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Not racing ones, but I did set out to cycle 160km through the peak district during a heat wave last year... I didn't take enough water and 99% of shops were shut due to COVID so lets just say that wasn't very enjoyable.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I try and just focus on one thing at a time and build it up. I don't let things build up and I try and jump straight back on as soon as possible. I have a saying I follow 'An arrow has to be drawn back before it fires forward, so if life is knocking you back be ready to fire forward'.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Don't try a 60km ride in the Yorkshire Dales as your first bike ride.
What are your goals?
To raise as much money as possible for Mind (a charity who has helped me a lot) and get into racing as soon as possible.
Who inspires you?
My old man and Peter Sagan.
