Joris is a Belgian athlete who enjoys the extreme races of Xtri such as the Norseman and Swedeman. He talks to Sundried about life as a triathlete.
Have you always been into sport?
I've been into sport since I learned how to swim at the age of 5. First there was only swimming; I was a more-than-decent open water swimmer and became national champion a few times. At the age of 23 I tried the sport I had always dreamed of: triathlon. It was love at first sight!
What made you decide to enter the world of triathlon?
I always dreamed of becoming a triathlete. When I finished my studies I thought the time was right to finally go for it.
What’s been your favourite race to date and why?
There are 3 races I really love and I can't choose between them. The first is Weiswampach Triathlon in Luxembourg. It's like the course is made for me; I find everything I'm looking for in a race there.
The second is Ironman Wales, which was my first full distance triathlon. I think I could make the podium there. The scenery is beautiful and the atmosphere is electric.
My third favourite race is Swedeman, where I qualified for my dream race which is the Norseman. It's more a race against yourself and I really like that.
And your proudest achievement?
Becoming the first Belgian to race in the Xtri World Championships.
Have you ever had any racing disasters/your toughest race yet?
I over-trained for a triathlon in 2016 and nothing went right during the race. I quit the race completely empty and it's the only time in my race career that I've had a DNF.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I have a really strong mindset. I'm capable of letting things go. My wife and son give me the right perspective.
What advice do you wish you'd been given before you started competing?
Enjoy every minute of it. Even when things are tough.
What are your goals for 2020?
Finish in the top 5 at the Norseman triathlon. Also to become a father for the second time.
Who do you take your inspiration from?
The joy of being good at something!
What do you like about Sundried and what’s your favourite bit of our kit?
The eco part of Sundried is what I fell for. We only have one planet! Picking one favorite product is almost impossible, but I like the cycle socks.and the men's t-shirt made from recycled coffee grounds.
