David is an athlete who specialises in running and cross country. He talks to Sundried about training and racing.
Have you always been into sport?
Yes, I started playing football from the age of 5, stopped playing at 30. During that time in school I was also a good 800m runner and cross country runner representing my county at the English schools championship. After school it was all about football. At 30 I took up cycling, last year 2020 I started running again 17 years later. 6 months later I managed to qualify for GB age group And will be competing in the triathlon worlds duathlon in Netherlands this year.
How did you first get into triathlon.
My friend John got me involved in triathlon but I’m not a great swimmer so my main focus is Duathlons.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race would be my first Duathlon Race. Par sands Duathlon finishing 6th. I’d only been running for 1 month and it being my first race to place 6th was a great feeling.
What is your proudest achievement?
The birth of my beautiful children. Proudest sporting achievement was representing my county and school, but I’m sure that will be smashed when I represent my country on September 4th this year.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
Being injured and poor transitions, something I need to work on.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I do briefly get down about it but then I use that setback as motivation to make sure I smash it then next time.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
Not so much advice I wish I was given, more like the advice I was given when I was a 15 years old by my P.E headteacher but did not listen.
What are your goals?
My goals are to focus, train well to be the best I can be in my chosen sports while enjoying time with my family, friends and fellow athletes. I want to be a top age grouper, if I can progress further and compete against the top guys that would be a great achievement (age may be against me).
Who inspires you?
My partner and children. I also have a friends who share the same motivation and targets as me which I find inspiring.
