Have you always been into sport?
I have been sport mad since I could walk. My parents said that I always had a bat or a ball in my hands as a child. I played football and cricket from my childhood until age caught up in my mid 30's. That's when running and triathlon took over....
How did you first get into triathlon?
I started running as a way to keep fit once my football days were over. Met a few old school mates at local races who introduced me to my local triathlon club. There was one quite major snag though. I couldn't swim. Not a single length of a pool!!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite race so far would have to be Ironman UK in 2019. It was my first full distance triathlon and I absolutely loved it!
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement to date is undoubtedly my 'Armbands to Ironman' journey. In 2017 I set myself a goal of learning to swim and then completing an Ironman. On my first swimming lesson, my coach took one look at my swimming and declared that he had his work cut out with me. I was that bad!! To see the smile on his face when I crossed the finish line after a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run was a moment I'll never forget.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
I've had a fair few racing mishaps. From getting stuck in my wetsuit to running out of T2 with my helmet on. All part of the learning curve I guess.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
If I could give one piece of advice to my younger self it won't be to never give up. Especially with swimming. It took me 4 months before I could string 3 lengths together, and numerous strops and meltdowns. But perseverance paid off and it kind of clicked.
What are your goals?
My goals are to consistently learn and improve. Then hopefully, one day, to qualify for the GB age group team.
Who inspires you?
I love to watch pros like Jan Frodeno, Lionel Sanders, the Brownlees, Lucy Charles-Barclay and Gustav Iden race. But I gain more inspiration from my friends and clubmates who combine hectic work and family commitments with triathlon training, and do so with a humility that I hope I can continue to pass on to novice triathletes.
