Have you always been into sport?
I’ve enjoyed sport since school but was only ever good enough for the rugby team at Scrum Half! At 16 I joined the Army which is where I was able to try lots of different sports and activities. I’ve continued to enjoy most outdoor pursuits but found a new passion in my 40's.
How did you first get into triathlon?
I first got into Triathlon in 2013 through the hosts at a caravan we stayed in on a Croft near Fort William. Spook (the chap) was part of the No Fuss Events set up and said my wife and I ought to have a go at the Wee Tri they ran every year. We did, we loved it and have done it several times since!
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
My favourite Triathlon to date was the National Police Triathlon at Ullswater in 2014. It was a sunny still day, the scenery was amazing, and the cycle course was brutal and really took it out of the legs for the 10k run.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest sporting achievement was unexpectedly being 1st Grand Vet at the Crinan Puffer Race 2019, an 8+ mile run along the Crinan Canal in Argyll. It’s the first time I’ve been first, it’s a great feeling.
Have you ever had any racing disasters?
I’ve carried a bit of a soleus niggle for several years. In 2018 I was running the Arrochar 10k feeling strong and was just over a km from the finish it felt like my calf exploded. I could barely walk and had to hobble to the nearest Marshall for a lift back.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I am lucky that my wife is a Sports and Thai Massage Therapist. To get over setbacks it’s really important to rest and slowly return to any form of pace.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
I wish someone had introduced me to Triathlon earlier! The best bit of advice I was given was to treat Transition like the 4th discipline.
What are your goals?
My major goal is to keep competing into my 70's. At 55 I feel great and will keep looking after my ageing body as best I can with good fuel, regular exercise and lots of afternoon naps along the way! I’ve recently gone to Low Carb High Fat eating and 16/8 intermittent fasting. The peer reviewed evidence for optimal health following this lifestyle is jaw dropping.
Who inspires you?
There’s a guy called Dougie in our Cycling Club, he’s in his 70’s and still rides regularly. He now has a Gravel E-Bike which has given him a new lease of life. I admire any older folk that get out there and exercise.
