Have you always been into sport?

Yep, before I took up MTB, I was race riding over fences as an amateur jockey for 12 years, winning 3 areas title as well as finishing runner up 3 times more and twice making it in the top 12 national. Even managed to ride a winner at the home of national hunt racing, Cheltenham. Between giving up race riding 5 years ago and now, I have had a go at obstacle races (including a Spartan race), a couple of boxing bouts, I also practice yoga on a weekly basis and I am a qualified MIAS (mtb instructor award scheme) instructor!

How did you first get into cycling?

Started MTB during the first lockdown in March 2020 after all the gyms shut and my mental health took a turn for the worse!

If you are interested in getting into cycling, Sundried's kit is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned athletes. We have both men's and women's options available.

What has been your favourite race to date and why?

Completing Transalp in July 2021 (it is regarded as one of the most difficult mtb stage races in Europe). I took part in it raising money for charity in memory of one of my best friends Liam Treadwell  (grand national winning jockey) that unfortunately lost his life in June 2020 after some well published problems with his own mental health. I only really planned on taking part and completing it, but I managed to finished 32nd in my class from 76 and 104th overall from 260. Not bad for a lad that only started riding and training seriously last summer. I am all ready planning my return there in 2023 and hoping to make it top 20 in my class this time around. Although there is a possibility that I might do it in a pair!

What is your proudest achievement?

Making it to the top of Kilimanjaro (very mentally challenging), closely followed by every single winners that I have ridden whilst horse racing.

Have you ever had any racing disasters?

Had a couple of OTB during transalp, but no injury! When I was race riding I dislocated my shoulder, dislocated my AC joint, broke my nose and a few fingers. Plus I nearly bled out on a racecourse when I got trampled on during a race and cut an artery in my upper arm. As well as getting my nose peeled off my face due to a kick from a horse whilst we were both trying to get up from a fall in a schooling accident.

How do you overcome setbacks?

I am lucky to be very driven (probably to an unhealthy extent) so I literally would just put my head down and work towards my goals, dealing with whatever setback I encounter. I have got a good team around me, with my coach and partner and they both try to make sure I keep my focus in the right direction if I do need help.

What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?

It’s not about being great everyday, it's about doing everyday! I used to go out and try to beat the numbers every time. And get disappointed if I didn't. But now, I definitely feel like I do not need to be beating records everyday and more work towards my goals. It's too easy to lose races in training I would think!

What are your goals?

To be the best I can and to not ever get off the bike thinking "what if!?"

Who inspires you?

Anyone that doesn't give up, regardless of the challenge ahead of them!

Why work with Sundried?

When I approached Sundried for sponsorship to do transalp, not only were they very prompt in replying but also very honest in what they could or couldn't do. I believe that any working relationship need to be based on honesty and similar ethos. Plus being courteous doesn't cost anything! Also and importantly, their gear looks cool, and is practical with an athletes performance at heart without being overpriced. Making them an affordable commodity helping each and every single athlete in us towards our goals.
