Have you always been into sport?

Hmm, I love keeping fit, but wasn't naturally gifted at any particular sport, so it wasn't until my early 40s that I started challenging myself.

How did you first get into triathlon?

I’ve been around triathlete friends who suggested it, but I didn't think it was for me as I couldn’t front crawl. When my partner suggested I enter the same 70.3 as he was I thought he was mad… After some convincing I signed up, found a training plan online and, to my surprise completed it much quicker than I expected to. It's the best feeling crossing the finish line, and the whole experience is addictive!

If you are interested in getting into Triathlon, Sundried's kit is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned athletes. We have both men's and women's options available.

What has been your favourite race to date and why?

The first triathlon (70.3) was the best, I didn’t know if I'd manage it, I was full of nerves for a week before. I listened to all the advice given, soaked up the support and atmosphere like a sponge and loved every (well not every!) minute of it. The elements were in our favour, the scenery was fantastic, the crowd and volunteers were amazing, and the day ran like clockwork.

What is your proudest achievement?

Learning to front crawl 8 weeks before the first race. I had one group lesson for a morning with a fantastic coach, and practised like mad! I used to look in awe at the swimmers going up and down the lake without stopping. If I'd like to achieve one thing, it’s to encourage people to take the plunge and get a lesson - you'll be surprised how quickly you can conquer the discipline that puts many people off!

Have you ever had any racing disasters?

I had a run in with a rock on my skis many years ago. Snapped a few knee ligaments which had to be reconstructed. The consultant told me that I'd never be running marathons, he was right, but thankfully it copes with a triathlon…

How do you overcome setbacks?

I wish I had the magic answer, take it a day at a time and listen to the advice given by people who have had a similar experience.

What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?

I wish I knew how good the sense of achievement would feel at the end of a race, I might have done it sooner!

What are your goals?

This year I'm going to join a tri club and focus on improving in each area in the hope of achieving a sub 6hr30 70.3.

Who inspires you?

People I meet at the events, I'm amazed by what some people with major setbacks are achieving.
