21 August 2016 sees the return of the Monster Middle Triathlon, now in it’s fifth year.

This beautiful setting across the cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire promises to be a fast course which offers a great opportunity for middle distance personal bests.

The History of Monster Racing

Monster racing was created by triathletes, for triathletes.

In 2010 following a series of long training rides from couple Paul and Liz. Monster racing was born.

Paul is a double Ironman, competing in events from sprint triathlon upwards and is keen to produce events that people will want to enter year after year.

After racing across the UK and Europe, the couple looked at all the qualities they enjoyed from events they had taken part in, and combined them into Monsters races.

As a relatively new and growing company the Monster team welcome all feedback and strive to improve and expand their events, year after year.

Set Up

The event itself has its own campsite and there are also a few little bed and breakfast locations dotted near the course where participants can stay prior to the race.

Camping is available on Amherst Fields, with use of their toilets. Camping at the site is free of charge, all that is required is a donation to charity CamSAR.

Entries are limited to 300 places.

The distances are half Ironman, with a 1.9km swim, 92.9km Bike Route and 21km Run Route.

Registration and racking take place on the Sunday, both will be open at 4:30 to 6:15 to give you plenty of time to make your way to the start, which is about a 15 minute walk.

The race briefing takes place at 6.45 before the race begins at 7am.

The Swim

For 2016 the swim will start in waves, with the fastest 50 entrants starting the race. Proof of performance is required to enter at this wave. The swim in an unusual straight race down the Great River Ouse. The river is narrow and so the swim can become crowded and it’s important to focus on swimming in a straight line. The transition is about 400m away from the river exit. The banks are lined with supporters, which makes it an exciting swim.

The Bike

The bike ride is a short ‘out’ and then two laps. The wind tends to catch towards the left of the lap, which can be a cause for extra effort. The route takes riders out into the middle of Ely and round the cathedral. The ease of the course, as always will depend greatly upon the weather conditions.

The Run

The final leg of the race is the Ironman’s 21km run. The course is complete with 4 laps and an out and back finish. The start of each lap has a long hill, but supporters line the route for extra encouragement and the course has multiple drink stations dotted throughout.
